TED Talks: The Environment

So I was just talking to Jamie about flying to San Francisco this weekend because she is taking Virgin America for the first time. I’m excited for her. Have I ever mentioned I LOVE flying VA? Cause I do.

Anyway I told her to make sure to check out TED talks for in flight entertainment because they almost always have at least one or two topics that interest me. I pulled up the TED website to show her what they were and I found a gold mine of great talks regarding the future of our environment.

Check them out if you have some time.

Do your 5%

Just found this post from April in my drafts. I haven’t proof read it but I figured it was worth publishing. I dunno, maybe it’s pointless. Let’s find out!

This weekend I am in S.F. This morning at brunch Sean and I had this we had this talk about how our generation isn’t doing it’s part to create global social and political change, instead it’s in the park playing drunk kickball on the weekends. Actually I was just listening to my friend’s dissatisfaction with our generation. If the 20 and 30 year olds started taking the initiative to run for offices in their local and federal branches of the bureaucracy we could be making a difference. We should be trying to make a change, make a difference in this world and run it the way we think it should be run. He thinks everyone should be doing their 5%, at the very least.

I think maybe it’s from my upbringing but I don’t actually think things are that bad… maybe I am the problem with the world today. When I say “maybe its from my upbringing” what I mean by that is after years and years or trying to do what I want, I find it’s easier to do what my parents and elders think I should do. Yeah, thats called conformity, So I’ve been brainwashed, so I’ve been conditioned to think that things are okay when

It’s not that I don’t care, I just don’t think things are that bad. I mean I’m still alive and all, I’m relatively content and while I do think there are things we should be doing differently I’m not living in fear everyday or feel like I’m living in an intolerable environment. On one hand I do want to work toward a greater good but on the other hand I am still trying to make things good for myself. It’s like how much can you do for the community without giving up everything you want for yourself personally?

If That’s The Way It Is, Then That’s The Way It Is

Yesterday I spent some time thinking about “the past.”

For some reason the past always seems to be filled with more fondness than the present. It doesn’t matter which past it is. My theory is that because years are condensed into a small portion of my memory I only have room for things I want to remember and those are either pure fun or pure sadness. Things happening now are spread out over a longer period of time… I guess it’s like defragmenting your computer. There are huge gaps between the important information in the present so it takes awhile to recall the good times. When the memory has been defragmented the memories are more concentrated in the area they are given. There is a higher joy/pain to space ratio.

I always seem to want to go back to “the past.” I want to revisit those feelings. I want physically be in the memories I hold in my mind. I try to do that but as we all know, “you can never go back.” And I know this. I know it will never be the same again, but I think I’d still like to try and create some new memories while I’m at it.

Treasure Island: Gold and Green

Cross posted from MLR

Check this out:

All the buildings on Treasure Island will meet the gold standard of the U.S. Green Building Council, further reducing energy consumption.”

Taken from the recent article in Popular Mechanics revealing new plans to use San Francisco’s Treasure Island as a testing center for new green building developments and ideas.

That’s what they said, ALL the buildings. That’s pretty sweet.

Some of the other new features planned for Treasure Island’s green makeover include completely redesigning the infrastructure of the island to taking into consideration the amount sun and wind exposure unique to the location.

Sometimes it blows my mind that city planners hadn’t taken any of this into consideration when they had originally designed the city. What did they study in school and what were they getting paid for? I mean, granted they didn’t think about the effects of global warning, use of fossil fuels, etc. when the island was built in 1939 but even the Ancient Greeks knew about building their homes to receive winter sun and summer shade.

The article goes into more details as to the some of the projects they already have planned for the island. I’m really exited about this since I visit the Bay Area quite often. I’ve actually never been to Treasure Island myself but I’m thinking this will be great excuse to go on my next trip and get some “before” shots taken.
